How and when you got into the trade?
The North Way Studio began in 2011 as a tiny jewelry and knit shop on Etsy. I was teaching myself wire-wrapping from YouTube tutorials and selling them as I went along to help pass the time during a rather dark place in my life. From there, it was attempts at soldering on my kitchen table, and eventually I was fortunate enough to become an apprentice under two master goldsmiths who taught me all the techniques I now know. Gemstones and gold have completely consumed me, and I adore it.
How would you describe your work in 5 words?
Amulets stolen from another realm.
Where do you take your inspiration from?
Muses come from anywhere and everything--novels, a single word that tinkles in the air when its spoken, the dried rose hip foraged on a winter's walk. The simple magics of life, that's what I want to weave into my talismans.
What was the most memorable piece that you made?
Creating around a portrait cut diamond for a dear friend and fellow artist was just glorious. There's another plane, underneath the diamond, that you can peer through and see, so spinning more elements into that space is always magical.
Why do you enjoy working with Misfit diamonds?
Misfit Diamonds seems to truly care about the artisans they work with--one can just tell by how they know our aesthetics and tastes, setting aside certain diamonds that come in that they think will sing to us. It's really lovely to not just be another invoice number in the eye's of your supplier, but more a peer, and friend.
